While Charli XCX and Billie Eilish may have us wondering the colour of their underwear (and leaving us agape with that last line), the one thing that is missing from social media is tips on building a capsule underwear drawer. Who doesn’t love a good wardrobe purge or capsule build? Hop on any social media platform – ok, mostly Instagram and TikTok – and you’ll see people curating a seemly perfect capsule wardrobe. But underwear is the foundation of our everyday outfits, so let’s drop our panty tips!
Having the right types of underwear can make all the difference in comfort and confidence. Here’s a guide to the essential types of underwear you might want in your wardrobe and why each is important. Keep what works and throw out that which does not serve – or fit – you.
We’re not going to suggest colours or materials because we’re fans of choice. So go for lace, cotton, silk, or nylon if you like – we prefer to breathe in natural fibres. Colour-wise, whatever makes you happiest. Some might prefer black, white, bright colour, polka dots, or their nude shade (no, beige is not the only nude shade). The guessing is all up to you!
We’re going to keep it below the waist for this article and these are just recommendations. We’re also fans of choice.
Thongs
We’re doing this one first to get it out of the way. Some people love them, some hate them, they exist, they eliminate knicker lines. Then again…
Seamless
…so do these. They’re designed to be invisible under clothing since they don’t have any seams. They come in all cuts: high-rise, full cuts, bikinis etc. They’re the heavy lifters of the underwear drawer. Now, not all seamless underwear is seamless, so a tip is to check the edges. They should be laser cut, not sewn or have elastic. They should also have no bulk and lie flat. Any bulk might show.
Bikinis
These give you moderate coverage with a lower rise and sit comfortably on the hips. They strike a balance between coverage and a flattering cut.
Boxers
Apart from being on trend right now, they’re loose-fitting and breathable, providing maximum comfort, especially in the summer. They allow for more air circulation and can triple as loungewear, sleepwear and daywear. Are they the ultimate day-to-night piece of clothing? Maybe!
Boxer Briefs
Boxer briefs combine the coverage of boxers with the snug fit of briefs. They provide support while preventing chafing, making them ideal for active days. Now, speaking of chafing, if boxer briefs aren’t your thing then there are always…
Safety/anti-chafing shorts
Chafing is uncomfortable, full-stop. Add in the hot weather and it becomes painful. That’s why we love a good pair or several pairs of anti-chafing shorts under our clothing. Plus when there’s a strong wind, we’re protected.
Shapewear
Sometimes you want a smooth line for your outfit. This piece offers compression of various strengths and comfort.
Special occasions
Whatever makes you feel your best and most hot – go for it.
Specialty knickers
Period panties
Period panties are designed with absorbent layers to provide leak-proof protection during your menstrual cycle. They can be used as a backup to traditional menstrual products or even as a replacement.
Pregnancy and postpartum underwear
These are made to accommodate a growing belly and provide gentle support. They are typically crafted from soft, stretchy materials that adapt to your changing body. Postpartum underwear gives you extra support and comfort after childbirth. They often feature high waists and gentle compression to help with recovery and provide a secure fit.
C-strings
Have an outfit with a high-slit or sheer around the hips but you don’t want to go commando? That’s where the c-string comes in. Like the name says, it’s a C, with no strings around the hips. Yes, before you ask, it does stay up.
Gym underwear
Moisture-wicking underwear is made from fabrics that draw sweat away from your skin and allow it to evaporate quickly. This helps keep you dry and comfortable during your workout. Some brands also help prevent the dreaded camel-toe that can happen when wearing leggings with a front seam.
